"Children see magic because they look for it. "
– Christopher Moore
Your child’s special occasion deserves special treatment, and we want your child to feel like royalty in anticipation of their big day. Whether it’s a birthday, graduation, confirmation, quinceañera, or bat mitzvah, your child wants to be part of the planning process, and that should be just as magical for them as the main event. With her decades of experience as a teacher, Girl Scout leader, and mother, Zoё knows exactly how to talk with children so they feel heard and important. Give your child the full custom-cake experience with their very own special consultation and tasting event, so your child can truly say, “I designed this cake!”
Supplemental options:
This cake contains a real, electrically-lit doll's house chandelier and furniture.
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
— Pablo Picasso
Whether it is a simple drawing or an elaborate story, children take such pride in their own creativity and accomplishments. Imagine the shine in your child's eyes when they present party-goers with a stunning cake that they have not only designed, but also created themselves! After a thorough phone or in-person consultation with you to establish parameters, Zoё meets with your child for all of the fun of the "My Dream" package PLUS a second session with your child to decorate their cake. The cake will be fully assembled and frosted by Zoё beforehand, and your child will receive 1-on-1 instruction in cake decoration. This process can be as guided or as free as you would like it to be, so the finished piece's degree of professional presentation is variable. Either way, it is a unique piece of deliciously edible art and a memory that your child will never forget.
This is a fully customizable experience, either as a fun, lighthearted surprise for a parent/grandparent's event, or as part of the child's special occasion.
This cake was for a 13th birthday - the cusp of "little kid" and "teenager" - and the child was appropriately torn between those two worlds. She loved the fun, playful cakes, but she also had her heart set on "a purple geode cake with gray fondant - please be sure that it's gray. And definitely a '13' on top." I thought it would make the design a little more special to make the geode into an illusion cake by turning the rock's fissure into a gravity-defying cave. Armed with those instructions, I started to draw.
As she looked at my sketch of her emerging concept, she said, "the cave looks kind of like a mouth. The stalactites and stalagmites could be teeth!" I watched her face change in excitement when her special creation crystalized (geode pun) in her mind. She suddenly exclaimed, "it needs an eye! It should have an eye on the side that makes it look like a roaring stone monster, like in fantasy books." With that pronouncement, the design was born.
From there, we had further consultation about whether she wanted silver or gold metallic details, what color the eye should be, and once the prototypes were made, she chose between circular and vertical-slit pupils. To my knowledge, I'm the only cake artist to have made this eye design with a vertical slit; I figured that out by experimenting with a popular technique for round pupils that required me to hand-mold molten isomalt - there were several finger burns in the process! In case you're wondering, yes, all the pieces adhere to my "everything visible should be edible" motto. The eye, like the crystal teeth and bespoke crystal "tiara", is made of butterscotch-flavored candy (isomalt tastes like sugar, but has a lower glycemic index that won't spike insulin or rot teeth - parent win!). It's basically a large lollipop without a stick.
"Desserts are the fairy tales of the kitchen—a happily-ever-after to supper."
- Terri Guillemets
